We’ve all been there - feeling too tired or overwhelmed to cook, and finding solace in the convenience of takeaway meals or ready-made dinners. It’s a quick fix, but often leaves us questioning our choices as we think about our health, budget, and satisfaction with what we eat. If you’ve found yourself justifying your takeaway habits by saying you lack the energy or time, you’re not alone.
The Struggle is Real
I’m on a mission to change my relationship with food. For too long, I’ve leaned on ordering out as my go-to solution for dinner. Often, I buy ingredients with the intention to cook, but then watch them languish in the back of the fridge—as I opt for the easy route instead. Meal prepping has been a fair-weather friend; some days it works, but there are times when the effort feels futile, and the flavors just don't match the delightful dishes I enjoy when dining out.
Turning the Tide:
Cooking and Eating Smarter

If you’ve faced similar challenges, know that transformative change is possible. Here are some strategies to help you shift from takeaway dependency to preparing delicious, satisfying meals at home:
Simple Meal Planning
Start with easy recipes that don’t require complex techniques or hard-to-find ingredients. Dedicate a weekend afternoon to plan your meals for the week. Consider making a mix of your favorite tried-and-true recipes alongside a few simple new dishes to keep things exciting.
Prep Like a Pro
Instead of preparing meals for an entire week, consider batch cooking for just a few days. This way, your meals are fresh, and you’re less likely to waste food. Spend a couple of hours on Sunday chopping veggies, marinating proteins, and preparing sauces. Having everything ready to go makes it easier to throw together a homemade meal after a long day.
Easy, Flavorful Recipes
Seek out recipes that are quick, healthful, and flavorful. Stove-top stir-fries, one-pan pasta dishes, and hearty salads can all be made in under 30 minutes. Adding bold spices and herbs can elevate simple ingredients and make them more enjoyable, diminishing any taste gap you may perceive compared to takeaway options.
Make it a Social Event
Cooking doesn’t have to be a solitary task. Invite friends or family to join you on your culinary journey. Not only does this make the process more enjoyable, but it also opens the door to sharing responsibilities and swapping recipes that can enhance your meals.

Budget Wisely
Takeaway meals can add up quickly. By cooking at home, you not only improve your dietary habits but also save money. Set a weekly grocery budget that allows you to purchase fresh ingredients, and track your savings compared to ordering in. You might be pleasantly surprised when you add it up!
Be Flexible with Leftovers
Don’t let food go to waste! Use leftovers creatively. A roasted chicken one night can turn into chicken tacos the next. This not only reduces waste but also saves time on future meals.
Embrace the Change
We’re all on this journey together, aiming to change habits and eat better. Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection. Celebrate even the small victories, and don’t be too hard on yourself if you occasionally revert to your past habits. With commitment and creativity, you’ll discover that cooking at home can be just as satisfying - and much healthier than that tempting takeaway option.
